September 2010


Save the Frogs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to amphibian conservation, invites you to create cool artwork that features frogs and says SAVE THE FROGS! or savethefrogs.com (or both) somewhere on it. The grand prize winner receives $100. Top prize winners may also see their artwork featured on Save the Frogs products. The contest runs through September 29, 2010.

The Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge is a national contest that rewards U.S. cities for recycling aluminum beverage cans. The challenge is sponsored by a partnership between the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Novelis Corporation, and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. A total of $70,000 will be awarded. The deadline to register is September 30, 2010.

Through its annual awards program, the American Horticultural Society celebrates outstanding achievements, encourages excellence, and inspires innovation in the art and science of horticulture. Several awards are offered that recognize merit in the fields of teaching and environmental education. Nominations are due September 30, 2010.

October 2010


The Siemens Competition seeks to promote excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects. It fosters intensive research that improves students' understanding of the value of scientific study and informs their consideration of future careers in these disciplines. Scholarships for winning projects range from $1,000 to $100,000. Submissions are due October 1, 2010 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

The John Muir Association is accepting applications for the John Muir Conservation Award. Awards are presented in four categories: Conservationist of the Year, Environmental Education Conservation Award, Nonprofit or Public Agency Conservation Award, and the Business Conservation Award. The deadline for nominations is October 1, 2010.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is now accepting submissions for its 5th annual digital photography competition. TNC is looking for beautiful nature photography representing the diversity of life on Earth. Original digital images of our lands, waters, plants, animals and people in nature are all eligible. Photographers must be at least 18 years old. Photos must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time October 4, 2010.

The American Geological Institute is sponsoring three contests for Earth Science Week 2010. The theme of the photography contest, open to all ages, is "We Depend on Energy." The visual arts contest theme is "Energy on Earth;" open to grades K-5. Students in grades 6-9 are eligible to enter the essay contest: "How Energy Powers the Planet." All entries are due October 15, 2010.

Students in grades 4-8 are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge. Registration is open until October 15, 2010.

Classrooms throughout the U.S. are invited to enter the Produce for Kids “Play with Your Produce Healthy Classroom Challenge.” Entries can be any creative project from a play to a gardening project that focuses on getting kids to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. The deadline to enter is October 30, 2010.

Send in your inspiring stories about National Public Lands Day (NPLD) volunteers and help NPLD recognize the efforts of hardworking individuals who have gone above and beyond the norm to care for our public lands. Nominations due October 30, 2010.

November 2010


National Public Lands Day (NPLD) launches the 2010 "Volunteers in Action" Photo Contest, as well as, the "My Favorite Public Land" Video Contest. The two contests encourage volunteers to use their creativity and skills with a digital or video camera to capture the amazing work of volunteers and the beauty of public lands for great prizes. The deadline for entries is November 1, 2010.

National Geographic's International Photography Contest for Kids is accepting photos from kids between the ages of 6 and 14. Use photography as an excuse to explore nature! The categories for entries are: Animals, Scenery, People, and Humor. Prizes include digital cameras! All Entries must be uploaded or postmarked by November 1, 2010.

Nestlé has launched a national search for the Very Best In Youth -- 13 to 18 year olds who excel academically and work hard to make their community a better place. The young people selected for this prestigious award will be recognized with $1,000 donation to the charity of their choice, an all-expense-paid trip to Los Angeles plus other fabulous prizes. Application deadline is November 1, 2010.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize outstanding community service by young people in grades 5 -12. State honorees are awarded $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. Applications due November 1, 2010.

The Lexus Eco Challenge is designed to educate and empower middle and high school students to take action to improve the environment. More than $500,000 in scholarships and grants will be awarded. Submission deadline is November 3, 2010.

The Angela Award from the National Science Teachers Association honors one female student in grades 5–8, who is involved in or has a strong connection to science. The awardee will receive a $1,000 US EE Savings Bond or Canadian Savings Bond purchased for the equivalent issue price. Apply by November 30, 2010.

The National Science Teachers Association sponsors numerous awards for which environmental educators or their students may be eligible. Most applications are due November 30, 2010.

December 2010


Since 1993, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment has recognized the outstanding efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. Winning teams receive $10,000. Applications (on CD) must be received by 5 p.m. December 1, 2010.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored President's Environmental Youth Awards recognizes young people across America for projects that demonstrate their commitment to the environment.  All students who complete an environmental project and submit an application will receive a signed certificate from the President of the United States and one project from each of the ten EPA Regions will be presented with a Presidential plaque at an EPA sponsored award ceremony. Apply by December 31, 2010.

February 2011


ExploraVision is a science competition that encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. Awards are given in out in four grade levels (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12). The deadline for submission is February 2, 2011.

March 2011


This challenge gives students the opportunity, tools and inspiration to become agents of change. High school student teams from across the country are challenged to create sustainable, energy-related environmental improvements that can be replicated by or impact others beyond their local community. Top prizes include thousands of dollars in scholarship money and more! The challenge opens August 17, 2010 and runs through March 15, 2011.

The KY Department for Environmental Protection is pleased to open up the nomination period for the 2010 Green Art Contest.
The NEED Project’s mission is to promote an energy conscious and educated society. All NEED learning activities are correlated to the Kentucky Core Content and Program of Studies in Science and other disciplines. The program will make teaching energy fun and exciting as you return to your classroom. Participation in this workshop provides educators with free use of NEED's Science of Energy OR Energy Works kit that teach energy concepts through hands-on activities. Additional curriculum materials to teach about energy and energy resources, including electricity and energy efficiency, will be provided.

NEED materials and training programs provide comprehensive, objective information about the scientific concepts of energy and the sources of energy – their use and their impact on the environment, the economy and society.


Children age 13 and under are invited to enter the Ranger Rick Photo Contest. Each winning entry will be featured in the Ranger Rick magazine and on Ranger Rick’s website. Winners will also receive a Certificate of Recognition and five copies of the Ranger Rick magazine featuring their entries. The contest is held three times per year.

The John Muir Youth Award aims to encourage young people to get involved in conservation and the protection of wilderness and biological diversity. This award is NOT a competition. If your students complete the project according to the five criteria, they will receive a certificate for their achievements.

The Charles Edison Fund provides free units (for grades 4-8) on various experiments conducted by Thomas Edison and other scientists. The Fund also sponsors an awards program to help stimulate student interest in science. All participating students receive an engraved certificate. The top winner, as chosen by the teacher, receives an Edison sunburst light bulb t-shirt, matching baseball cap, and signed certificate of award.
