Professional Environmental Educator Certification
To apply to the 2014 Certification Course, download and submit the Application and Self-Assessment documents to the right. All application materials must be received no later than September 20, 2013, and can be submitted at any time before the deadline.
Applicants with complete applications will be accepted into the program on a first come, first serve basis. A waiting list will be established after 25 students are registered for the class. If you are accepted into the program but have to cancel, please notify us so that we can allow students on the waiting list to enroll in the course.

||Benefits of Certification
The KEEC Professional Environmental Educator Certification program provides several benefits to participants, including:
- A credential recognized by a state agency
- Increased content knowledge
- Skills to effectively work with both teachers and other nonformal environmental educators
- The opportunity to network with other educators
The environmental education community is working toward more content-driven professional development. This includes a voluntary certification program for non-formal environmental educators. While the program is rigorous and contains assessments, it also contains numerous support systems that will allow anyone willing to put in the effort to complete the program.
Our program is based on Guidelines for the Initial Preparation and Professional Development of Environmental Educators , prepared by the North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE).
In order to maintain status as an active Kentucky Certified Environmental Educator, each program graduate must submit a continuing education (CE) report. Reprts are due Juanuary 1st of each calendar year. Report forms coming soon.

Dates, Locations & Format
Dates and locations for the upcoming courses are listed below. The certification course consists of four workshops, each lasting three days. Each workshop begins at 12:00 p.m. Thursday and ends by 1:00p.m. on Saturday. Workshops are usually held at Kentucky state parks. Students complete an independent study between the fall and spring workshops.

The course includes four assessments:
- Environmental Literacy Exam
- A written exam on environmental literacy.
- Environmental Debate
- A debate and short essay on a current Kentucky environmental issue.
- Reading Assignment
- A short essay answering questions related to a series of readings on the History and Philosophy of Environmental Education.
- Environmental Education Unit
- A detailed instructional unit which applicants tailor to their own individual program or situation.
Certification Registration Fee: $50
Checks will be due after you are notified of your acceptance into the program.

Additional Costs: Four 2-night stays at Kentucky state parks or a hotel, plus meals, and mileage. (Room block rates are usually offered; please inquire.)
A limited number of need-based scholarships are available for this program.
For students not yet certified in Project WET, Project WILD, or Project Learning Tree, additional fees may apply to cover the cost of these curricula books. The books generally cost about $15-$20 each, and have a plethora of EE activities that we will draw on throughout the course.
